A Review on Surface Coatings on 316L Stainless Steel to Improve Biomedical Properties
نویسنده
چکیده
Stainless steel 316L has widely used as bioimplants in cranial plates, dental implants, bone fracture fixation, prothestic joints. However, low wear resistance, in some cases susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion in body environment and release of toxic ions from the surface are the basic disadvantages which this material prone to be. It has still applied as a temporary biomaterial due to its excellent mechanical strength, acceptable corrosion resistance, good formability and cost-effectiveness. Surface engineering aims to improve surface-dominated properties, like resistance to corrosion, ion release or wear, without compromising the mechanical properties of the bulk. In this paper, some of methods for the surface coatings of the stainless steel as a biomaterial are reviewed.

Design and investigation of TiO2 –SiO2 thin films on AISI 316L stainless steel for tribological properties and corrosion protection
The TiO2–SiO2 thin films were deposited on AISI 316L stainless steel via sol-gel method. Then, the effect of the added amount of SiO2 on the structure, morphology and mechanical properties of the films and corrosion behavior of AISI 316L stainless steel substrate were investigated. So, X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, depth-sensing indenta...

The corrosion behaviour of 316L stainless steel coatings obtained by cold spray method was investigated in this study. 316L powders were deposited onto Al5052 aluminum substrates. The coatings were produced using nitrogen (N2) process gas. In order to further improve the corrosion and mechanical properties of the coatings, heat treatment was applied at 250 and 750 °C. The corrosion performances...
متن کاملAntibacterial effects of silver–zirconia composite coatings using pulsed laser deposition onto 316L SS for bio implants
Bacterial invasion on biomedical implants is a challenging task for long-term and permanent implant fixations. Prevention of initial bacterial adherence on metallic implants is an important concern to avoid extracellular matrix (biofilm) secretion from bacteria that is resistant to antibacterial agents. In order to overcome this defect, recently, surface coatings such as zirconia (ZrO2) with hi...
متن کاملCoating of strontium substituted hydroxyapatite on surface treated surgical grade stainless steel by electrodeposition for biomedical applications
Surgical grade stainless steel (316L SS) is one of the widely used implant material in orthopedic surgeries. But often the release of metal ions is evidenced from the implants and subsequently a second surgery is required to remove the implant material. One way to control the release of metal ions is to coat the implant material with a biocompatible material like hydroxyapatite (HAp). Strontium...

Influence of formation of surface nano/ultrafine structure using deep rolling on plasma nitriding and tribological properties of the AISI 316L stainless steel was investigated. Initially, the deep rolling process was carried out on the bar-shaped specimens at 15 cycles with 0.2 mm/s longitudinal rate and 22.4 rpm bar rotation. Then, plasma nitriding treatment was applied on the as-received...
